The idea of ‘the world is her canvas’ has never been more true than with Kristin Grant (aka Urbanheart), who is known for painting on canvasses, people, walls, windows, fabrics and anything else that will sit still. She has created over 50 canvasses as live painting performances at events including Shambhala, Earthdance, VEMF and the Victoria Spoken Word Festival.
Kristin is often invited to paint at weddings, private parties and dance events at Sunset Room and other local venues. Kristin is the creator & organizer of “Urbanheart Live,” a community of artists that paint weekly at Sunset Room and other music events. She has also been invited into some very unique & diverse opportunities, including being the opening act for the Dream Cabaret’s performance at the McPherson Playhouse, being the bodypainter for Ballet Victoria’s 2012 season promo materials, and scare-i-fying people for the Halloween 2011 Monday Magazine cover.
A bodypainter for less than 18 months, Kristin has already painted 100s of people, ranging from sophisticated all day full-body pieces for professional photography or video shoots, to face & body designs at festivals & celebrations. She works with accenting each person’s unique features with colour, shading and details. She enjoys the challenge of a fresh concept and completely transforming her human subjects into creatures and new personalities. Her work is being greatly acknowledged by her peers, including her 2nd Place and People’s Choice Awards at Bodygras Canadian Bodypaint Championships in Nanaimo last year. To Kristin, bodypainting is the ultimate collaboration: bodypainter, model, photographer or videographer all get to contribute to create totally unique images and scenes.
Kristin’s inspirations include music, creative people, nature, rhythm and layers. She experiments with many painting techniques and loves starting large canvases with spontaneous and dramatic backgrounds of bold colours or textures. Like a crow she’ll collect curbside treasures and puzzle together airbrushed stencils, hand painted images, transparent colours and shiny collage elements. She plays with contrasting balance and complexity. Kristin’s training includes 5 years of part time classes at Vancouver Island School of Art and countless hours of practice.
And as for the future? Kristin & Urbanheart Live are always on the lookout for inspired collaborators, innovative projects & diverse multimedia opportunities. Kristin continues to build new partners in film and photography, and expects many more humans to become beauties & zombies under her brushes.
